The Azam Marine fast ferry runs Dar es Salaam ↔ Zanzibar in around two hours, several times daily. Comfortable, scenic, and a good alternative to the short flight when time allows. Pemba is also reachable by ferry from Zanzibar.

Our preferred mode — a vetted driver-guide in a fully equipped 4×4 Land Cruiser. Quiet, comfortable, and the difference between an itinerary and a journey.

Self-drive is possible but rarely worth it outside Zanzibar — roads, signage, and policing make a private driver the better choice for safari circuits. On the island, a small 4×4 or scooter is liberating.

Taxis, bajaj tuk-tuks, and dala-dala minibuses serve towns and Zanzibar. Useful for short hops; not for long routes between cities.
