Untamed Experience Afrika

Destinations

Where Tanzania reveals itself.

Each region has a different rhythm. Choose by feeling, not just by name.

Zanzibar tropical island jetty

Zanzibar

Stone Town — a UNESCO labyrinth of carved doors, spice markets and Swahili history. Best wandered slowly with a private historian, ending at sunset on a rooftop.

Paje — the kitesurfing capital of the east coast. Wide tidal beaches, beach bars, and a young, easy energy.

Nungwi — the lively north tip with calm swimming waters that don't follow the tide. Sunset dhows, dolphin tours, and the island's best beach bars.

Kendwa — Nungwi's quieter neighbour. Powder sand, deep blue water, full-moon nights.

Kuza Cave — a freshwater swim in a sacred limestone cave near Jambiani. A quiet half-day with a Swahili lunch on the surface.

Sandbanks & snorkeling — Mnemba Atoll, Kwale Sandbank, and the southern Menai Bay reefs. Private dhow charters with a chef on board are the way to do it.

Dar es Salaam airport

Dar es Salaam

Tanzania's largest city — a coastal capital of business, music and old Swahili coast culture. Spend a day, then move on; or use it as a base for nearby islands.

National Museum — the Olduvai fossils, Zanzibar history, Tanzanian art. The single best primer for the country.

Mbudya & Bongoyo Islands — short boat hops from the city, white-sand day trips with grilled fish under palm shade.

Bagamoyo — 75km north, a former slave-trade port turned arts town. Old churches, German-era ruins, the Kaole archaeological site.

Mwenge Carvers Market — Makonde wood carving at its source, away from tourist mark-ups.

Nightlife — Masaki and Oyster Bay for cocktails and rooftops; live bongo flava and taarab in the older quarters.

African Art Gallery in Arusha

Arusha

The northern safari gateway, beneath Mount Meru in the coffee belt. Most journeys begin and end here.

Coffee tours — single-estate farms on the slopes of Meru, from the cherry to the cup, paired with a long lunch under the trees.

Arusha National Park — a quiet morning of canoe safari on Momella Lakes, often skipped by visitors and worth a half-day.

Cultural Heritage Centre — for serious Tanzanian art and tanzanite, with provenance.

Safari regions

Serengeti — endless plains and the great migration. Southern (Jan–Mar calving), central Seronera (year-round), northern Mara River crossings (Jul–Oct).

Ngorongoro — a collapsed caldera 600m deep — lions, rhinos, and Maasai pastoralists on the rim. One full day inside the crater is enough.

Tarangire — the elephant park. Vast baobabs, swamps, and big herds in the dry season (Jun–Oct). The best photographic light in the north.

Lake Manyara — flamingos on the soda flats, tree-climbing lions, dense forest along the Rift escarpment. A perfect first or last day on a northern circuit.

Elephants in Mikumi National Park

Hidden gems

Ruaha — Tanzania's largest park, vast and uncrowded. Selous (Nyerere) — boat safaris on the Rufiji. Mahale — wild chimpanzees on Lake Tanganyika.

Pemba Island, Mafia Island, and the Usambara Mountains reward travellers willing to slow down further.
